Assessing shipyard risks in new building projects using a hybrid Delphi-FMEA based method
Shipbuilding projects are among complex, heavy-resource required types. The amount of financial investment required in these projects make their investors more sensitive about on time delivery. This study aims at implementing a hybrid method to investigate ability of a group of shipyards in delivering their project on pre-scheduled time. To achieve this, firstly shipbuilding project stages are mapped using Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN 2.0). Then, Delphi method is applied to identify risk factors associated with such stages. Then, following Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA), severity, occurrence, and detection of risk factors are evaluated, resulting in calculation of priority number for them. That being said, this study sheds light on major risk factors affecting shipbuilding projects delivery among Iranian shipyards. These results effectively can be used to introduce risk mitigating actions for shipyards, and a guide for investors to choose more reliably.
